Kalpana Dance Theatre (KDT) is the brain child of Ms. Shangita Namasivayam, a Kalakshetra graduate. She established KDT with Daisyga Rani Tamilselvam as the Principal with the objective of promoting Indian art forms and culture. KDT is today an exponent of Indian culture and performing arts with a strong emphasis on Bharata Natyam and Odissi.

Moving steadily towards developing artistic and cultural awareness in the community, KDT presents yet another first with SHARANAGATI.

SHARANAGATI, or Absolute Surrender, paves the way for wisdom to blossom in the heart of the surrendered soul. For the dancer, it is the journey inwards and hence, the need to hold on to that moment where the dancer overcomes consciousness of self and goes beyond the body to connect with the Divine. The dancer then attains liberation in complete surrender.

SHARANAGATI presents renowned dancers and musicians from India and Malaysia who will explore this Indian philosophy through the classical dance styles of Odissi and BharataNatyam on the same stage for the first time.

The confluence of Odissi and BharataNatyam in SHARANAGATI demands the creative collaboration between highly skilled artistes and musicians in the two dominant streams of these dance forms to ensure the delivery of a rare treat for performing arts aficionados who will get to see the majestic tradition of BharataNatyam complemented by the grace and beauty of Odissi.

In the presentation of this unique confluence of BharataNatyam and Odissi, the spirit of both dance traditions will be strictly adhered to. The challenging task of assimilating the distinctive features of BharataNatyam and Odissi under all-new choreography is led by PT Narendran from Chennai and Leena Mohanty of Orissa, two award-winning dancers, choreographers and teachers extraordinaire. Illuminating the stage with them are Sumathi Chandra, Gowri Chandran, Umayal Eswaran and Nritta Ganeshi Manoharan.

The music score has been specially composed and arranged by O S Arun, one of the finest carnatic vocalists of today, and Dheeraj Kumar Mohapatra, a versatile and accomplished vocalist of Orissa.
